Lost in a Sea of Rig and Furrow
Surveying for Rig and Furrow fields
Durham County Council Archaeology Department worked to confirm the survival of historic rig and furrow systems and ensure their preservation as an important element of history within the Limestone Landscapes area.
This Project is now completed
The Lost in a Sea of Rig and Furrow Project has compiled a report establishing a typology, dating guide and management plan for rig and furrow systems across the Limestone Landscapes area. It is available electronically from the Limestone Landscapes, local authority and archaeology department websites. You can download the Ridge and Furrow Project Report (PDF, 28Mb).
The Lost in a Sea of Rig and Furrow Project have used the report to inform and target Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship Scheme to manage the existing resource of Rig and Furrow. We have also make it available to other interested parties who have an influence over how land with rig and furrow is managed
