Coal Countryside Counts
Ludworth Primary School pupils visit Ludworth Pit Heap
Durham Wildlife Trust has helped local people to explore a hidden dimension to disused colliery sites by linking the geology and biodiversity. They highlighted special qualities of the species rich grasslands and wetland that often develop on them.
This Project has now completed.
The Coal Countryside Counts Project led four community group visits and six school group visits to pit heap ecology sites, near Ludworth and Trimdon. In July 2012 we organised a BioBlitz event in Elba Park, which attracted 25 participants and recorded over 200 species.
Further work
The Coal Countryside Counts Project has led a further four school visits and four community group visits to pit heap ecology sites at Fishburn, Ludworth and Trimdon. There are now audio tours of the sites at Trimdon Grange and East Hetton:
There are also walk leaflets for both sites:
The Wildlife Trust have also produced school visits materials, so that the schools that we have worked with can now lead visits to the sites themselves.
